Making sense of the wild pre-draft first round trade rumors involving the San Francisco 49ers
Gregory Fisher-USA TODAY Sports

The San Francisco 49ers could be in for a very dramatic night during the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft, with more fuel added to speculation around what they might do at the wide receiver position with a wild pre-draft report.

Per a report from The Athletic's Dianna Russini, the 49ers have had talks with teams, including one in the top 10, about trading either Brandon Aiyuk or Deebo Samuel to move up in the first round.

Aiyuk has been the subject of frequently refuted trade speculation during the offseason, whereas Samuel had reportedly been assured he would not be dealt this year. So how do we make sense of a report that suggests either could be on the table? Let's try unpack it before the action gets going.

Who instigated the discussions?

Russini's initial report said that the 49ers had been involved in "conversations" with teams, it did not give a clue as to who had instigated those discussions.

Clarity in that regard may have been provided in a post on X (formerly Twitter) from NBC Sports Bay Area's Jennifer Lee Chan.

She wrote: "In regards to the 49ers trading either Deebo Samuel or Brandon Aiyuk, it would need to be a VERY valuable trade package that would land the club one of the top receiver picks in tonight's first round."

Reading between the lines, that indicates teams have called the Niners about both Samuel and Aiyuk, and the response has been that San Francisco would only accept a return that puts them in position to select either LSU's Malik Nabers or Washington's Rome Odunze, the next two receivers in the class after Marvin Harrison Jr. of Ohio State.

The other question is, if that is the case, which teams have been doing the calling?

Who could make the trade?

The 49ers would appear unlikely to deal either Aiyuk or Samuel to an NFC team. However, Russini's report mentioned a top-10 team, and the top-10 team with the biggest need at receiver, outside of Harrison's likely new employers the Arizona Cardinals, is the Chicago Bears.

The Bears have been heavily linked with Odunze but a trade that sees San Francisco send 31 and a wide receiver to Chicago in exchange for the ninth overall pick would give Caleb Williams a bonafide star to go with D.J. Moore and Keenan Allen. With another first-rounder with which to add to their roster, that could be a very appetizing deal for the Bears.

Six picks after the Bears are scheduled to make their second selection, the Indianapolis Colts are poised to make their first. However, the Colts are thin at wide receiver outside of Michael Pittman Jr. and have previous for trading draft capital for a 49ers star.

The Jacksonville Jaguars have previously been reported as holding an interest in Aiyuk, with the owners of the 17th pick possessing an uninspiring receiver corps despite signing Gabe Davis in free agency.

Per Tom Curran of the NBCSports Boston (h/t Nick Cattles), the New England Patriots have been working on an Aiyuk trade, though the compensation in that case would almost certainly be the 34th pick in the second round. It's debatable whether that would be enough to get the Niners to part with their leading receiver.

But, for now, the futures of both of the 49ers' top wideouts are up in the air, making San Francisco one of the most fascinating teams to follow on night one of the draft despite not being scheduled to pick until 31.
